Store layout: how to make the right layout of the sales area
Customer loyalty, store throughput and, as a consequence, the volume of its turnover largely depends on the layout and design of the retail space.

Therefore, the layout should be such that:

  • Customers walked through the entire area of the store
  • The potential of the sales equipment should be fully utilized
  • The movement of people between the retail equipment was comfortable and the logic of its placement was understandable to customers
  • Zoning of the retail space would correspond to the spontaneous behavior of shoppers and ensure maximum economic return of each zone
  • The atmosphere of the sales area should be pleasant and dispose to make purchases, including impulse purchases.
  • Internal logistics should be convenient for store personnel
  • The attention of visitors should not be distracted by the frills of the sales area design
The free movement of people is most often counterclockwise. People walk from right to left, most of them being right-handed. Accordingly, the entrance to the store is better located on the right side. In a small store, the entrance can be in the middle, and the movement inside the sales area is organized counterclockwise due to a certain placement of shelves.
If the store is located in a building at the intersection of streets, it is logical to organize the entrance from the side of the street with a more intensive flow of people and cars

Entering the store

The most common shape of a sales floor is a rectangle. Let's take a look at the types of layouts:

Types of sales floor layouts

With this layout, sales equipment and aisles for customers are built in the form of parallel lines.
Racks in the "grid" can be located not only perpendicular to each other, but also at an angle, that is, on the diagonal of the sales floor.
Most often this layout is used in self-service stores. It is optimal for sales areas of 200 square meters or more. It is obligatory to have hanging signs showing the main zones of the sales area. In relation to the placement of equipment lines in the sales area, the scheme can be longitudinal, transverse and mixed.
The advantage of this layout in maximizing the use of the sales area.
But there are also disadvantages - if the shelves are not properly arranged and there are no signs, it is difficult to find the right product, the sales area is not visible.

Lattice

In the case of this layout, the flow of customers is also directed counterclockwise around the perimeter of the hall, and in the center is located island sales equipment. It is used in large, for example, department stores, where trade is often conducted through the counter. In this case, the sales area is divided into departments, sections, pavilions, which can be isolated from each other.

It can also be used for individual small stores of 50-150 square meters. m.

Advantage of the layout: the sales area is fully viewable.

Disadvantage: less space for displaying goods than when shelving is arranged in the form of a "grid".

Loop or boutique layout

Store equipment is arranged asymmetrically, creating a unique atmosphere. But such a layout requires a clear design of the room, otherwise there is a risk of leaving entire shopping areas without customers. It is suitable for stores of youth goods, unusual designer or technological goods, gift stores, etc. Not desirable for stores above 300 square meters.

Labyrinth

Selling goods by samples displayed in the sales area.
For example, a furniture supermarket designed like a large exhibition. Huge spaces are allocated for ready-made interiors: living rooms, bedrooms, children's rooms, kitchens, hallways. If the buyer likes something, he writes down the data of the product and goes to the warehouse to pick it up. At the warehouse, the furniture is already packed in flat cardboard boxes, where it lies unassembled.

Exhibition layout

In practice, large stores often use a combination of two or three types of layouts for different areas of the store.
